The common sports injuries include anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscal tears. These are most commonly seen in athletes involved in pivoting-type sports such as soccer, basketball and rugby. Reconstruction of the ACL and repair/ debridement of the meniscus are performed via arthroscopy, otherwise known as keyhole surgery. This involves putting a camera and instruments into the knee via very small skin incisions (typically 2) and treating identifiable problems. These are typically done as day surgery procedures and patients are discharged within the same day and a quick recovery is expected given the minimally invasive nature of these operations.
