OUR SERVICES

Hyaluronic Acid (Synvisc) and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelets are small cells found in your blood which are rich in growth factors. These factors are relevant for healing in a variety of tissue types including bone, tendon, cartilage and skin. Potential uses of PRP include muscle, tendon and ligament injuries (including conditions like tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis/heel pain and muscle tears) and also osteoarthritis. We also use the injections as a post-operative supplement to our cartilage and meniscal repair procedures.

In the clinic, a small amount of your own blood is withdrawn and put into a special centrifuge machine. This machine concentrates the amount of platelets within minutes and this platelet rich plasma (PRP) can then be injected for a variety of applications. Our centre uses the Arthrex ACP System.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a component of the normal fluid found within the knee. This fluid functions as a lubricant to ensure smooth functioning and painless motion. In osteoarthritis, the hyaluronic acid content decreases and the aim of the injections is to supplement or replace this lubricant. In addition, hyaluronic acid has good anti-inflammatory properties and can help to reduce pain and swelling. The injection is given in the clinic and we use a FDA-approved single injection called Synvisc One which can potentially give up to 6 months of pain relief. The injections can be repeated when necessary.
